American Diabetes Month – ADA’s annual, month-long program each November for people with diabetes and their families.  The program’s goal is to raise awareness about the serious and often preventable complications.  A variety of public relations and informational activities are conducted.

Professional Educator’s Conference – this statewide conference features nationally recognized speakers and is designed to educate nurses, dietitians and physicians about the latest trends and research findings for the treatment of diabetes.  It’s purpose is to improve standards of care for the 475,000 adults affected by diabetes in Wisconsin.  The 2012 conference is March 9-10 at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha, WI.  Visit http://professional.diabetes.org/wisconsin for additional details and to register.

American Diabetes Alert Day – The American Diabetes Alert day is conducted nationwide to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and its risk factors.  The centerpiece of the Alert is the diabetes risk test, which is widely distributed and promoted through community activities and local media.  On March 27, 2012, Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin will host “What You Need to Know About Diabetes and Your Kidneys” from 6-7 p.m.  Call 800-272-3666 to register for the class.

Advocacy – Diabetes Advocates around the country fight to increase funding to prevent, treat and cure diabetes; improve access to health care and eliminate discrimination against people with diabetes at school, work and elsewhere in their lives.  Sign up to be a Diabetes advocate at diabetes.org.

Diabetes Day at the Capitol – Diabetes Day at the Capitol is an annual event where volunteers from all over Wisconsin come to Madison to visit with law makers and advocate support for diabetes related issues.  The date for 2012 has not yet been determined.

Living With Type 2 Diabetes – This free program can help you learn more about diabetes and how to manage it.  Enroll and we’ll help you get started by sending you the Where Do I Begin booklet.  Then, over the next 12 months you’ll receive more information and tools to help you learn how to live well with diabetes.  You’ll also find opportunities to find support in your community and online.  To enroll by phone, call 1-800-DIABETES; to enroll online, visit diabetes.org/living.

Por tu Familia - Many Latinos feel guilty spending time and money on personal health. They feel selfish putting their own health care ahead of their family's needs. The opposite should be true. The American Diabetes Association is here for your family, but we want to bring the message home that you should take care of your diabetes or prevent yourself from developing it, for your family's sake too. Your family needs you to be healthy and feeling your best, so that you can be there for them.  The ADA’s Latino Initiative health campaign is Por tu familia -- or "for your family".  Materials targeting the Latino community, available in English and Spanish, are an integral part of our outreach efforts to help improve the quality of life for Latinos with diabetes.  From books to brochures, our publications will give you information on topics ranging from cooking with a Latin flair, to being more physically active, to maintaining a healthy weight.  The workshops include: Diabetes Day, Stay in Touch, With Open Eyes, Everybody Dance For Your Health!, Everybody Move for Your Health!, Health and Flavor in the Latino Kitchen and With All My Heart.

Project Power – Project Power is a year long African-American initiative program.  The educational program was developed to provide churches with a foundation that would assist them with integrating diabetes awareness messages and life application principles into the life of the church.  These lessons can improve the health of members with diabetes, their families, and even the community.  It is our hope that churches will conduct the workshops outlined in Project Power and continue building upon the foundation laid by Project Power and implement strategies and initiatives that support healthy lifestyles within the Church Family.  Volunteers from churches and the community are trained to facilitate these workshops.  The workshops include: Diabetes Day, POWER Over Diabetes, Fit For The Master’s Use, O Taste and See, A Clean Heart and Train Up A Child.

Marshfield Clinic – Fall Diabetes Conference – Marshfield Clinic hosts an annual educational program.  The clinic is fully put on by the Marshfield Clinic staff; however, the American Diabetes Association offers its full support and resources.  This year the conference will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012.

1-800-Diabetes – The National Call Center provides information and referral for callers nationwide.  The goal is to answer general questions on diabetes via phone, mail, fax or email in a prompt, accurate and courteous manner.  Written materials are provided on a wide range of diabetes-related topics.

Diabetes.org – The American Diabetes Association’s web site, diabetes.org is the largest interactive diabetes site on the internet.  On the site you can find information about diabetes and living with the disease, register for special events, make a donation, tour an interactive grocery store, read journal abstracts and much more.
