We are pleased to launch this new site which we hope you will find interesting and useful. We plan to use this site to post stories from people living with diabetes, information about local ADA activities as well as articles about diabetes research.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is the only national, voluntary health organization dedicated to improving the lives of all people affected by all types of diabetes. To put the burden of diabetes into perspective, below are some relevant statistics:
233,619- The number of annual deaths due to diabetes in the United States (more than AIDS and breast cancer combined).
23.6 million- The number of children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. More than 420,000 adults and 6,000 children in Wisconsin have diabetes.
57 million- The estimated number of Americans who have pre-diabetes including 1 million in Wisconsin.
$5.9 billion- The estimated cost of diabetes in Wisconsin. 1 out of every 5 healthcare dollars is diabetes-related.
1 out of every 3 Americans born today will develop diabetes in their life time if present trends continue, making diabetes the defining issue of health for the next decade. With your support, we can reverse this trend in our communities while continuing on the path to find a cure.
I look forward to interacting with you in this new cyberspace sort of way and of course meeting you to learn more about your personal commitment to the fight against diabetes.
-Sally Sheperdson, Executive Director
P.S. I want to give a special shout-out to our intern, Elizabeth Siepmann, who has made this site possible – thank you!
